TikTok just got another lifeline in the U.S. — and it’s coming straight from former President Donald Trump.
On June 19, 2025, Trump signed an executive order granting TikTok a third 90-day extension, pushing the deadline for ByteDance (TikTok’s parent company) to sell its U.S. operations to September 17, 2025. That means TikTok is safe — for now.
This marks the third time TikTok has received a temporary pass to keep operating in the United States, despite ongoing pressure from lawmakers over national security concerns. Critics claim that TikTok’s Chinese ownership could give the Chinese government access to American user data — a claim TikTok has repeatedly denied.
Trump’s order comes under the 2024 Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary-Controlled Applications Act, which gave ByteDance a strict deadline to divest. The original cut-off was supposed to be earlier this year, but Trump has now extended it three times — most recently in January, then April, and now June.
In a statement, ByteDance welcomed the extension and reiterated its commitment to serving over 170 million U.S. users and millions of businesses who rely on the app.
Not everyone’s happy about it though. Some lawmakers, especially Democrats like Senator Mark Warner, are calling the move “reckless,” saying the government is compromising national security by continuing to delay enforcement.
Despite the controversy, Trump seems optimistic that a deal could still happen — possibly one that satisfies both U.S. lawmakers and China. Several American tech giants, including Oracle and Amazon, are rumored to be interested in acquiring TikTok’s U.S. arm, but nothing’s confirmed yet.
For now, TikTokers can breathe easy. The app remains up and running, and the new deadline is set for September 17, 2025. Whether that means a sale, a ban, or another extension… well, we’ll just have to wait and see.
