Chris Brown is once again making headlines — but this time, it’s not for a new single or performance. The 36-year-old R&B star has officially pleaded not guilty to serious assault charges stemming from an alleged nightclub incident that took place in February 2023 at the upscale Tape nightclub in London’s Mayfair district.
The Allegations
According to UK prosecutors, Brown is accused of hitting music producer Abraham “Abe” Diaw over the head with a tequila bottle, followed by a series of punches and kicks once the victim hit the ground. The alleged altercation, reportedly captured on CCTV, left Diaw with serious head injuries, including gashes and torn ligaments.
Also involved in the case is Brown’s associate, Omololu Akinlolu, known professionally as HoodyBaby, who has also pleaded not guilty to the same charge of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent.
More Charges Pending
In addition to the main charge, two more counts have been filed:
-
Assault causing actual bodily harm
-
Possession of an offensive weapon (the bottle allegedly used in the attack)
Chris Brown has not yet entered a plea for those two charges. He is due back in court on July 11, 2025, with the official trial set to begin on October 26, 2026. The trial is expected to last about one week.
Bail Conditions and Tour Status
The singer was arrested earlier this year in May 2025 while staying at a Manchester hotel during his UK tour. He was released on a massive £5 million bail and has been allowed to continue his “Breezy Bowl XX” world tour — under strict bail conditions, including surrendering his passport when not performing internationally.
Despite the ongoing legal case, Brown has resumed his tour schedule and performed at several European dates since the arrest. Fans were seen showing support outside the courthouse during his recent appearance.
A Long Legal History
This isn’t the first time Chris Brown’s name has been linked to violence. The singer famously pleaded guilty to felony assault in 2009 following an altercation with then-girlfriend Rihanna. Over the years, he’s faced several other legal issues, lawsuits, and controversies.
The victim in the current case, Abraham Diaw, has also filed a civil lawsuit, seeking £12 million in damages for physical and emotional trauma.
Final Thoughts
As Chris Brown continues to perform for fans around the world, his legal troubles are far from over. With new charges, a high-stakes trial, and a civil lawsuit looming, the months ahead will be intense both in and out of the courtroom.
